Non-parliamentary parties urge Armenian authorities to appeal to the UN because of tensions on Azerbaijani border

Tensions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and in Nagorno-Karabakh are growing, which threatens the resumption of hostilities, three non-parliamentary parties have stated in their open letter addressed to the Armenian government. They called on the authorities to immediately contact the UN Security Council with a request to intervene in the situation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Armenian-Azerbaijani border conflict escalated in November. On November 14 and 15, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) accused Armenia of shelling its positions from the territory of Gegarkunik Region. In its turn, the Armenian MoD stated that on November 14, Azerbaijani militaries tried to occupy positions in the eastern direction of the border; it turned into a shootout. Armed skirmishes occur amid the establishment of customs posts by the Azerbaijani Army. On November 11, such a post appeared on the Goris-Kapan highway; and on November 15 – on the Kapan-Chakaten road.

The above three non-parliamentary parties (the European Party of Armenia, the Conservative Party and the "Sovereign Armenia" Party) have appealed to the Armenian government in connection with the tense situation on the Azerbaijani border and in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The parties also called on the authorities to take into account "the fact that the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) member-countries are openly providing military, political and moral assistance to Azerbaijan," and urged them "to start the process of quitting the CSTO."
