Azerbaijani post creates problems for residents of six Armenian villages

An Azerbaijani customs post has been set up on the Kapan-Chakaten road. Residents of six villages of the Syunik Region must cross the border or take a 150-kilometre-long detour. Villagers may face problems with movement and buying foodstuffs, said the head of the Chakaten community. Azerbaijani militaries' actions have violated villagers' rights, the Armenian Ombudsperson has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Azerbaijan had notified Armenia about the installation of a customs post on the section of the Goris-Kapan highway, while Armenia will set up its own checkpoint there.

Ara Arutyunyan, the head of the Chakaten community, has noticed that more military servicemen appeared on the highway sections under Azerbaijan's control – up to 15-20 persons; all of them are in masks and armed.

In winter, it will be impossible to complete the alternative road in 2-3 months. "Residents of the village make their shopping in Kapan; and if they close the road now, they'll face a serious problem, and not only in Chakaten, but also in other five villages," Mr Arutyunyan has explained.

Residents of these villages have absolutely no guarantees of their rights, from the right to life to the right to free movement, the Armenian Ombudsperson has emphasized on the Facebook.
