Political analysts explain Sarkisyan's refusal to participate in resignation of chief of General Headquarters

Armenian President Armen Sarkisyan seeks to avoid confrontation with Nikol Pashinyan amid the scandalous change in the administration of the General Headquarters of the Armenia's Armed Forces. The President of Armenia also wants to maintain neutrality in the confrontation between the Prime Minister and the opposition, political analysts suggest.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Onik Gasparyan's term as the chief of the General Headquarters of the Armenia's Armed Forces expired on March 9, since, despite the calls, President Armen Sarkisyan did not send a draft decree on the resignation of Onik Gasparyan to the Constitutional Court. Onik Gasparyan went to court with a request to check the legality of his dismissal.

Nikol Pashinyan proposed to return Artak Davtyan to the post of chief of the General Headquarters of the Armenia's Armed Forces. In 2018-2020, Artak Davtyan already led the General Headquarters. On March 11, the President of Armenia did not support the proposal and returned it with objections. On the same day, Nikol Pashinyan sent his proposal to the President again.

The President is trying to take the most neutral position in the situation with the chief of the General Headquarters of the Armenia's Armed Forces, political observer Akop Badalyan notes. At the same time, according to the expert, by his actions, Armen Sarkisyan drew attention to the limitations of the institution of the president in making decisions.

Political analyst Stepan Danielyan also believes that the President of Armenia has undertaken a mediating mission between the government and the opposition and is trying to maintain neutrality.

Meanwhile, political analyst Armen Vardanyan does not rule out that the Prime Minister has compromising information about the President, with which Nikol Pashinyan is putting pressure on Armen Sarkisyan.
