EU believes there is no real opposition in Georgia

Evolution is a better way of attaining ones' goals than revolution but the European Union is nonetheless positive about the situation in Georgia. This was announced by EU Special Envoy for the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie at a press conference in Yerevan on January 30.

"The new Georgian government is actively overcoming the problems that have built up. They have had a good start and they have the EU's support," Mr Talvitie said. He added that the IMF (International Monetary Fund) was expected to give a report on Georgia, after which it would become clear what kind of assistance the country really needed. "I met many civil society activists in Georgia. It seems that there is no real opposition and the results of the parliamentary elections in March are already easy to predict. The opposition parties want more time to prepare for the elections. It will become clear in the near future whether or not the elections actually will take place in March or whether it will be possible to postpone them to a later date," Mr Talvitie explained.
