The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) obliged the authorities of Russia to pay 26,000 euros to Temirkhan Amakhanov, a resident of Derbent, recognizing him as a victim of torture by law enforcers. The ECtHR’s decision was pronounced against the backdrop of the Russia’s refusal to implement the decisions of the Strasbourg Court.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has pointed to a violation of the article prohibiting torture and degrading treatment, and obliged Russia to pay EUR 26,000 to each of the human rights defenders, Svetlana Anokhina and Maisarat Kilyaskhanova, who were in the Makhachkala shelter during the visit of law enforcers, who forcibly took away Khalimat Taramova, a native of Chechnya, and also Iraida Smirnova, who was also hiding in the shelter.

An acquittal for Abdulmumin Gadjiev was unlikely, but given the absence of proofs in the charges, there was hope for a minimum sentence; therefore, the court's decision turned out to be unexpectedly harsh, friends of the Dagestani journalist have stated. In their opinion, appealing the verdict will not lead to the acquittal or any significant reduction in the prison term.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has announced the verdict in the case of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev, accused of financing terrorism. They were sentenced to terms from 17 to 18 years in prison.
