The authorities' report on the modernization of waste collection infrastructure has caused skepticism among Makhachkala residents.

In Makhachkala, more than 2500 garbage containers have been installed and replaced, and 141 new container sites have been equipped, the authorities reported. Local residents, commenting on this report on social media, doubted the usefulness of the new containers without regular garbage collection and cleaning of the sites, and also complained about the lack and poor placement of the bins.

The administration of Makhachkala reported on its website that the installation of new euro-containers continues in the city. One of the new container sites has been equipped by the city’s housing and communal services (UJKH) on Dakhadaeva Street.

The new containers are characterized by increased strength and ergonomics, are supposed to optimize garbage collection, reduce operating costs, and facilitate the work of utility services, the administration indicated.

The post with the report from the mayor's office about the installation of new euro-containers was published by the Instagram* public makhachkala_ which has about 253 thousand users. As of 12:30 MSK on September 27, this post received 224 likes and 72 comments.

Users identifying themselves as residents of Makhachkala doubted that the installation of new containers reflects a real improvement in the situation. "They installed them, filmed a video for content, so to speak, and that’s it, use them at your health," wrote abubakr_dizain.1.

"Makhachkala is a big city. Maybe you could tell us where exactly, for show?! We will all go there," sarcastically wrote almeisova_25_07_87.

"Does the mayor's office even know how garbage collection sites look in other cities, how they are fenced, clean, and what containers are placed there? Such a small ordinary household thing for the city, and it is presented this way. It feels like our city is a third-world country trying to reach the level of developing ones," wrote aliislamovich. Other social media users pointed out that the new containers do not solve the problem without timely waste removal and cleaning of the sites. "No matter how many euro or any containers you put, if the waste removal standards are not followed and if at least once a week cleanliness is not maintained around the collection points and the population does not keep it clean, there is no benefit from these euro-containers," noted marzhana12_.

"They take out the garbage once a day, and by evening there is a dump. Earlier, they took it out twice, and everything was clean," noted user dimadgu.

"Please install the same ones on Bratyev Nurbagandov Street, and more of them. They removed two collection points at the beginning of the street, and garbage is piling up on the sidewalk," wrote kama1912.

Other users complained about the lack of bins and poor choice of locations for their installation. "There is a catastrophic shortage of bins throughout the city," emphasized islam876728.

"At least put one garbage bin on Asadulaeva!" asked ya.hyaeva_stor_.

"Very good, but why are these containers on the sidewalks, on the roadway, right at some corner, blocking the view of the intersection? Can't they be installed in a way that they are not visible and do not interfere? There were in the capital, and there were in the provinces, but walking around Makhachkala, seeing and stumbling over bins – you don’t see that anywhere else," wrote macterok05.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that residents of Dagestan periodically complain about garbage collection problems. For instance, on February 25, residents of Kaspiysk doubted the effectiveness of the authorities' decision to install underground garbage containers, pointing to untimely waste removal. On June 20, 2024, residents of Makhachkala complained about overflowing containers and problems with garbage removal.
