The condition of the dormitory for students has drawn criticism of the university administration in Makhachkala.

In the dormitory of the pedagogical university in Makhachkala, the rooms and furniture have deteriorated, the wallpaper is peeling off the walls, the ceiling and walls are crumbling, and there is unsanitary conditions, complained a student. Local residents, commenting on her complaint on social media, criticized the university administration, while former students said they repaired the rooms themselves and the conditions in the dormitory have not changed for years.

One of the students of the Dagestan State Pedagogical University named after Rasul Gamzatov (DGPU) in Makhachkala filmed a video of a room in the dormitory. The video was published on September 5 by the Instagram*-public tut.dagestan. The footage shows partially torn wallpaper from the walls, a shabby wooden floor, and worn-out furniture. In the description of the video, the student also complained about cockroaches, the poor condition of the mattresses, and the crumbling ceiling and walls.

"The conditions are terrible, there are cockroaches everywhere, the mattresses are in awful condition, the ceiling and walls are crumbling. Is there really no funding for repairs? At least it could be refreshed so that students live in more or less normal conditions," the student wrote.

This post in the Instagram*-public tut.dagestan, which has about 1.6 million followers, had received 1110 likes and 213 comments by 05:50 MSK on September 7.

Commentators criticized the university administration and questioned the spending of funds for the maintenance of the dormitory. "Look at the administration and you will understand where the money allocated for students goes," wrote user mmova.z.

"And where do the targeted funds from the budget allocated for the repair of dormitories go?" questioned user tsibats.

Former students said that during their studies they repaired and furnished the rooms themselves. "This is my room. We did the repairs with the girls," said goluboglazaia_a.

"The last repair was in 2012 when I moved in, they just installed new windows and wardrobes, after that, they probably haven't touched it again. But I remember that I moved into a more decent room, of course, we glued the wallpaper ourselves," said tenderness___ss.

"Yes, the toilets and the bath are terrible, without doors. Since this dormitory was built, nothing has been done. All the students do everything themselves: they change doors, buy wardrobes for themselves, and do repairs themselves. Do parents have a magic wallet to do everything?" questioned ttt.iiiik19.

Other users familiar with the dormitory said that its condition has not changed for many years. "About 10 years ago, I visited my girls there in the dormitory, has nothing changed since then?" wondered laser_lash_mahachkala.

"In principle, nothing has changed there since 2013," noted user oaps_0.

"It was as it was, and it remains, in my opinion, this is my former room," noted magomedovich__97.

As of 05:50 MSK on September 7, there were no comments on the website of the Dagestan State Pedagogical University named after Rasul Gamzatov regarding students' complaints about the condition of the dormitory.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that students from the North Caucasus have repeatedly complained about the conditions in dormitories. For example, in October 2022, students of the Kabardino-Balkar State University in Nalchik complained about unsanitary conditions in the dormitory and unsuccessful attempts to carry out disinfection.

In January 2008, the Prosecutor's Office of Dagestan reported that DGPU could not provide places in dormitories for all needy students, while more than 200 rooms were occupied by teachers, university staff, and outsiders.
