The authorities of Chechnya reported on new history textbooks ahead of the elections for the head of the republic.

Schoolchildren in Chechnya study the history of their homeland using new textbooks, reported the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic. The new materials began to be used during the campaign for the elections of the head of Chechnya, voting for which is scheduled for September 18-20.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", the problem of a shortage of school textbooks has been relevant in Chechnya for a long time. On September 1, the authorities of the republic reported that updated Chechen language textbooks for grades 1-4 and new Chechen language and literature textbooks for grades 5-9 should arrive at schools during the current year.

Schoolchildren in grades 5-7 began studying with the new textbooks "The History of Our Land. Chechen Republic" on September 1, reported the Minister of Education and Science of Chechnya Khozh-Baudi Daaev, whose words were cited by IA "Grozny-inform" on September 5.

The work to provide students in grades 5-7 with these textbooks has been completed, Daaev reported.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that in September 2023, the textbook "History of Russia. 1914-1945" by Vladimir Medinsky and Anatoly Torkunov caused a wide resonance. Activists, scholars, and politicians from the republics of the North Caucasus criticized a fragment in which the deportation of the peoples of the Caucasus was explained by their collaboration with the fascists. The head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov demanded to rewrite the relevant chapter.

The authors of the textbook interpreted events freely, and there was no mass support for German fascists in the North Caucasus, stated activists and historians on October 2, 2023. On October 10, one of the authors of the textbook, Anatoly Torkunov, promised to change the controversial paragraph after the criticism.

On October 24, 2023, it became known that mentions of specific peoples were removed from the new version of the controversial paragraph, and the mass deportation was called a tragic page in history.

It should be noted that in Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, and Kalmykia, the anniversaries of the deportation of fellow countrymen are celebrated annually at the republican level. The "Caucasian Knot" has published reference materials "Deportation of Chechens and Ingush", "Deportation of Balkars", "Day of the Revival of the Karachay People: Difficulties of Rehabilitation", and "Deportation of Kalmyks". In Chechnya, the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow was observed on the anniversary of the deportation until 2011, when the authorities decided to move it to May 10 – the date of the funeral of Akhmat Kadyrov, which can be read in the reference "Caucasian Knot" "How Kadyrov Turned Mourning into a Celebration on February 23".
