Azerbaijani activist Nijad Ibrahim cut his throat in protest against the brutal treatment by prison staff and the court's decision to tighten his punishment regime. Ibrahim's defense appealed the decision to tighten his conditions of detention.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot," in July 2025, a court in Baku sentenced activist Nijad Ibrahim to 6.5 years in prison. He did not plead guilty, and the defense appealed the verdict. On October 6, 2025, the appellate court upheld the verdict. On August 5, the court in Baku tightened the conditions of activist Nijad Ibrahim, ruling to transfer him to a closed-type prison for six months. The prison administration accused the activist of violating internal regulations. Ibrahim believes the decision is another manifestation of pressure on the activist.

Activist Nijad Ibrahim, in protest against the mistreatment he faced in prison and the tightening of his punishment, cut his ears and throat, his wife reported. "For two weeks, there was no news from Nijad. Then he called and said that in protest against the mistreatment he faced in the penal institution, regular placements in solitary confinement, physical pressure, and the prison administration's proposal to tighten his punishment regime, he cut his ears and throat. It turns out he hadn't called due to feeling unwell. They stitched his wounds," said Parvin Ibrahimova to a correspondent from "Caucasian Knot."

According to her, her husband was required to write an explanation. "When Nijad refused to comply with this demand, a prison staff member struck him in the heart area. We cannot understand what they want from Nijad, what they cannot achieve from him. He was arrested on a fabricated charge, and now the court's decision has tightened his conditions of detention," said Parvin Ibrahimova.

The activist's lawyer, Zibeyda Sadigova, told a correspondent from "Caucasian Knot" that she had filed an appeal against the decision to tighten Nijad Ibrahim's regime, but she had not met with him recently in penal institution No. 10.

It should be noted that the activist had previously inflicted injuries on himself. For instance, on January 13, 2025, Ibrahim injured himself in the courtroom in protest against a judge's remark by hitting his head against the wall. He required medical assistance, and the court proceedings were interrupted. In November 2024, he inflicted injuries on himself in solitary confinement in protest against his unjust arrest. He also attempted suicide in pre-trial detention.
