Official Sukhumi explained the pressure regarding the severance of relations with Abkhazia from Nauru.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia commented on Nauru's decision to sever diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, stating that Nauru was subjected to "unprecedented pressure." Official Tbilisi welcomed the decision of the island state.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", in June 2018, Georgia severed diplomatic relations with Syria after the latter decided to establish diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This step was taken under pressure from Russia, violating fundamental norms and principles of international law, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated at that time.

The Republic of Nauru decided to sever diplomatic relations with Sukhumi and Tskhinvali, established in 2009, "under conditions of unprecedented and systematic external pressure," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia.

In a statement on the department's website, published on July 29, it is stated that the implementation of joint initiatives was "hindered by Georgia and its Western partners," who exerted political, diplomatic, and economic pressure on Nauru to revise the decision on the recognition of Abkhazia.

It also cites the words of former Nauru President Baron Waqa, who publicly stated during his visit to Abkhazia about attempts to force his country to renounce the recognition of Abkhazia through political and financial pressure.

"Such practices contradict the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. Historical experience shows that the policy of pressure, threats, economic coercion, and attempts at artificial isolation cannot change existing political realities," the statement says.

According to the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government of Nauru decided to sever diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia on July 21. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia welcomes the decision of the executive body of the Republic of Nauru, the Cabinet of Ministers of Nauru, to terminate diplomatic relations "between the Republic of Nauru and the Republic of South Ossetia, also known as the State of Alania" and "between the Republic of Nauru and the Republic of Abkhazia," the Ministry's statement says.

Official Tbilisi is also ready to establish diplomatic relations with Nauru and strengthen bilateral cooperation. "This decision once again confirms that respect for and adherence to the norms of international law are the foundation of healthy international relations," the ministry's statement says.

As of 8:30 AM Moscow time, the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia does not contain a reaction to Nauru's decision.

It should be noted that among sovereign states, the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was recognized by Nicaragua (September 2008), Venezuela (September 2009), Tuvalu (September 2011), and Syria (May 2018). In May 2011, the island state of Vanuatu recognized Abkhazia, but later signed a treaty with Tbilisi on recognizing the territorial integrity of Georgia.
