Participant of the miners' protests in Chiatura sentenced for insulting the judge

The convict for beating the director of the mine, participant of the miners' protests in Chiatura, Georgy Neparidze from Shukruti, has been sentenced to one and a half years of imprisonment for insulting the judge.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", in mid-January, a court in Kutaisi sentenced four participants of the protests in Chiatura to imprisonment, finding them guilty of beating the director of the mine. Georgy Neparidze was sentenced by the judge to six years and three months of imprisonment.

On July 7, Georgy Neparidze from Shukruti was sentenced to one year and six months of imprisonment for insulting Judge Tamar Mazanashvili, who was considering the case of the attack on the mine director, the publication Publika reports today.

According to Neparidze's lawyer, Nino Andriashvili, the judge did not clarify what the final sentence for Georgy Neparidze was, considering the two sentences. She is unaware whether the new sentence absorbed the harsher punishment or if one and a half years were added to the already imposed six years and three months.

According to her, the court was aware of the first-instance sentence in the case of the attack on the mine director. "The judge should have provided an explanation. All judges give explanations in such situations when announcing a sentence, stating what was ultimately determined. I hope she will do this in the text of the sentence," the lawyer stated.

In the opinion of the defense, the court made an unfair decision. The main figure in the case was not interrogated, regarding whom, according to the prosecution, disrespect was expressed. The lawyer reported that a court employee, questioned during the hearing, explained that there was a recording of the court session, but the recording itself was not presented in court. Additionally, no expert conclusion confirming the presence of Georgy Neparidze's voice on the audio recording was provided, although four defendants were present at the trial, the publication Netgazeti informs.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that at the end of March, a miner died at the Shukruti mine in Chiatura, as claimed by colleagues, his death is related to poor ventilation. The employer states that the man died after his shift in the tunnel, where he was waiting to be lifted to the surface.
