Kerimli's defense called the court's refusal to consider the complaint about the conditions of detention unfounded.

The condition of the leader of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Ali Kerimli, has worsened due to sleep disturbances. The defense filed a complaint about the conditions of detention, including restrictions on calls and access to information, but the court did not consider it.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", on November 29, 2025, employees of the State Security Service detained the leader of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) Ali Kerimli and his advisor, member of the party's presidium Mamed Ibrahim. Both opposition figures were arrested. Kerimli is accused under Article 278.1 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (actions aimed at the violent seizure of power or the violent change of the constitutional order of the state). He rejected the accusation and called his criminal case political persecution. On June 16, in the appellate court, Kerimli stated that his rights to phone calls were restricted. The chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Ali Kerimli, has been restricted access to information – his cell has no television, no radio, he is not given newspapers, and he has also been deprived of the right to make calls, his associates stated on June 26.

Due to prolonged sleep disturbances in the detention center of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, Kerimli's health has deteriorated as a result of actions by his mentally ill cellmate, the press service of the APFP stated.

"The mentally ill prisoner has still not been transferred from the cell where Ali Kerimli is held. This person performs zikr at night, utters religious slogans, and his behavior disrupts Ali Kerimli's sleep. Permanent insomnia is already leading to a weakening of his health and immunity," said a representative of the APFP to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot".

According to him, Kerimli's opportunities for phone calls are also still being restricted.

"In recent weeks, Kerimli has not been able to call home at all. The day before, he was given such an opportunity, but the call was interrupted three times. As a result, out of the allotted 15 minutes, Kerimli was able to talk for only 4 minutes. Ali Kerimli was made to understand in the detention center that he could only speak within certain limits and only in that case could he expect to fully exercise his right to phone calls. However, Ali Kerimli did not accept such a condition. He managed to inform his family that he would never accept the conditions of self-censorship, otherwise his political struggle would be meaningless and he would not be in detention at all. Therefore, his conversation was interrupted," the APFP official further stated.

According to him, Kerimli's lawyers filed a complaint with the Sabail District Court regarding the violation of his rights to phone calls, receiving press, and being held under conditions that violate his peace.

"However, the court did not accept the lawyers' complaint," noted the APFP representative.

One of Kerimli's lawyers confirmed to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" that the complaint about the conditions of Kerimli's detention was not accepted for consideration by the court.

"We appealed to the court in the order of judicial supervision with a complaint about the conditions of Kerimli's detention. However, the court unjustifiably refused to consider the complaint. Now we will file an appeal," said the lawyer.
