Opposition activist Gela Khasaya, detained on charges of assaulting a man, has reached a plea bargain with the prosecutor's office and pleaded guilty.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in October 2025, a court arrested Gela Khasaya, a member of the "Girchi - More Freedom" party, on charges of intentional, less serious bodily harm committed by a group of individuals.

On May 8, the Tbilisi City Court approved a plea bargain with opposition activist Gela Khasaya. He pleaded guilty and, after reaching a plea agreement, will be released in September of this year, according to Novosti-Gruzia.

According to investigators, Khasai and a second defendant in the case, Vasil Kerdikoshvili, were beaten in August 2025 while drinking beer. Khasai was detained on September 29 of that year, and he called the case politically motivated. Both defendants claimed to be strangers to each other and to the victim.

According to Khasai's lawyer, Omar Purtseladze, Kerdikoshvili was prepared from the outset to testify against Khasai and sign a plea agreement. In such a case, Khasai would have faced a guaranteed five-year prison sentence.

Ultimately, after pleading guilty, both Khasai and Kerdikoshvili received one year of imprisonment and three years of probation. The court took into account the seven months spent in custody.

Protesters in Georgia have been demanding new parliamentary elections and the release of political prisoners since November 28, 2024. Security forces violently dispersed the protests, using tear gas and water cannons, and detained protesters. Thousands of people were subjected to administrative prosecution during the protests.
