A Georgian citizen has been detained on charges of espionage.

Counterintelligence officers detained a Georgian citizen for espionage for foreign intelligence services, and two others have been charged in absentia.

As "Caucasian Knot" previously reported, a Russian migrant in Georgia reported an attempt to recruit him by the FSB. FSB officers in Vladikavkaz coerced the cooperation of Russian citizen Roman Yevseyev, who moved to Georgia in 2022 but returned to Russia for one day in late 2025.

The Georgian State Security Service announced that its counterintelligence department detained one citizen of the country on charges of espionage. According to the agency, he collected and transmitted information on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. The State Security Service (SSS) reports that two more Georgian citizens, convicted of a similar crime, are also involved in the case. They are currently outside the country; charges will be brought against them in absentia and they will be placed on the international wanted list through Interpol, Interpressnews reported on April 22, citing the SSS. The agency did not specify which country's intelligence services the Georgian citizens worked for.

According to the investigation, a foreign intelligence officer commissioned a Georgian citizen to collect information against the state for a fee. In particular, the investigation established that the detainee was instructed to collect and transmit information on the following topics: the deployment, strength, and resources of Georgia's security forces—the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Security Service, and the Ministry of Defense—as well as photo and video recording of the locations of these agencies and information on the location of strategic facilities, including bridges and highways.

"The detainee will be charged under Part 1 of Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (espionage), which carries a sentence of 8 to 12 years in prison," Georgia Online reported, citing the State Security Service.

As a reminder, the Abkhaz Security Service previously stated that Georgian citizen Emzar Bagishvili was detained on March 10, and that a case of espionage was opened against him on March 12. Bagishvili is suspected of collecting and transmitting information regarding the socio-political situation in Abkhazia, as well as military equipment and transport routes.
