A soldier from Kalmykia was killed in Ukraine.

Roman Popov from Malye Derbety was killed in combat. Since the beginning of the Russian operation in Ukraine, authorities have officially named at least 223 combatants killed there.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," by April 13, security forces and officials had officially recognized at least 4,565 soldiers from the Southern Federal District as killed in combat in Ukraine, including 222 from Kalmykia.

The name of another combatant from Kalmykia killed in Ukraine was announced by the Maloderbetovsky District administration, which reported the presentation of a posthumous award to his mother.

Roman Popov, a native of Malye Derbety, was killed in the combat zone on August 10, 2024, at the age of 21. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, the municipal administration reported on its Telegram channel.

The publication notes that the family moved from Kalmykia to Volgodonsk while Popov was still in school, but he "always remained a fellow countryman."

Thus, at least 223 fighters from Kalmykia have been officially recognized as killed in the military operation. "Caucasian Knot" maintains a list of names of natives of the North Caucasus and Southern Federal Districts killed in the military operation. The list was compiled based on data officially released by government officials and law enforcement agencies, according to the Caucasian Knot report "NVO Statistics: Losses Are Growing in Southern Russia".

The Maloderbetovsky District Administration reported another fellow countryman, Nikolai Ustyantsev, killed in Ukraine in January.

State awards, memorial plaques, and appearances on Channel One do not guarantee state support for the families of those killed, according to the Caucasian Knot report "Three Comrades Served: How the Authorities Are Depriving the Families of Killed Volunteers of Benefits", which describes the stories of the slain soldiers. "He holds two Orders of Courage. But no official honors were given to his family," said a relative of one of the victims.
