Residents of Sunzha demanded coastal protection work due to the rains.

Residents of Sunzha in Ingushetia are concerned about the lack of riverbank protection work amid heavy rainfall in the region. Residents said they fear a repeat of the situation in Dagestan.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on April 9, Russian Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov announced the raising of the state of emergency in Dagestan and Chechnya to federal due to the flooding situation.

Local residents reported that during heavy rains in late March and early April, the Sunzha River's water level rose to dangerous levels, and at the intersection of Nadrechnaya and Roza Luxemburg Streets, the water level was less than a meter before it overflowed its banks, Fortanga reported.

"The nearby playground will simply be demolished next time. The cost is 50-60 cubic meters of concrete and about one ton of rebar, the coastline is 40-50 meters long," a local resident said.

According to him, residents of Sunzha fear a repeat of the situation in Dagestan, where authorities were unprepared for the emergency.

Heavy rainfall fell in Ingushetia on March 28 and 29. The Sunzha River rose to 3 meters. Dozens of rescuers participated in the cleanup efforts. They restored power and pumped water out of apartment buildings in Nazran.

On April 5, rainfall in the village of Troitskoye caused a section of the road along the riverbank to collapse, flooding several houses and roads. According to authorities, the flood season in the republic is not yet over, and more heavy rain is expected soon.

In January, the Ingush Ministry of Natural Resources postponed construction of protective structures on two sections of the Sunzha River in the city of the same name, citing financial difficulties, the publication noted.

Experts acknowledged the need for bank protection to protect residential buildings and garden plots, but due to the high level of subsidies in the Ingush budget, they intend to seek co-financing from the federal budget. The closest opportunity to receive funding is the "Construction" program for 2028-2030.

Local residents were surprised by this stance. During heavy rains in 2023, private homes and plots were flooded in Sunzha, and in December 2025, authorities announced plans to build an open drainage system and an earthen protective dam on Engels Street.

"We contacted both the head of the republic, Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov, and the plenipotentiary representative, Yuri Chaika, because coastal protection is a matter of utmost importance. Currently, the structures near the houses are unreliable, made of gravel. As a result, we received such a disappointing response," a representative of the residents' initiative group told the publication at the time.

According to the Caucasian Knot weather service, Sunzha will be cloudy and dry on April 10. Light rain, occasionally turning to moderate, is expected on April 11.
