The investigative focus on the fate of the dormitory residents in Nalchik has not improved their situation.

On February 21, residents of the KBGAU dormitory complained to the republic and Russian authorities about the eviction demands. They stated that they maintain the building themselves and have carried out major repairs, but received notices to vacate their housing, and meetings with the rector yielded no results. Representatives of the Kabardino-Balkarian State Agrarian University (KBSAU) countered that the university's management is not forcing former employees to vacate the dormitory, but is merely clarifying their reasons for residing there. Reports about the gate and access gates being blocked are false, as there is a checkpoint 100 meters away, the university explained. She said that she received a room in the dormitory in the 90s, when the late Boris Zherukov was the rector of the academy, based on an order. "Zherukov, when giving us rooms, said that we could live as long as we needed, but we had no right to privatize or sell them. The building was in a state of disrepair, we did the repairs ourselves, replaced the pipes, electrical wiring, and hung wallpaper. And all these years we kept our rooms in good condition, putting all our funds. And after we were laid off, they showed us the door,” she told a “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

According to the woman, they were offered another dormitory on Nogmov Street instead, a corridor-type dormitory with a shared bathroom.

“At our age, standing in line for the toilet, you must admit, is not very convenient,” she emphasized.

Nonna Arutyunyan has lived in the dormitory for 20 years. She worked as a cleaning lady at the university.

“I have two higher educations, but I agreed to work as a cleaning lady to get this living space because I had three children and nowhere to live. We did the renovations ourselves and still "We've been doing all the repairs ourselves, keeping the building in good condition, and paying the utilities. In 2017, we were all laid off, and now we're being asked to move out, but I personally have absolutely nowhere to go," she says.

Natalya Arshinova has lived in the dormitory since 2008. She has no other housing and nowhere to move out. She lives with her daughter.

After a visit from Mikhail Fishman, the head of the Investigative Department, and his promise that their rights would not be violated, Natalya, according to her, has gained hope that they won't end up on the street.

"We were all on the waiting list for better housing conditions at the Academy, but that line was eliminated," she noted. She.

They weren't on the housing waiting list at the Nalchik administration. One of the previous rectors, Shakhmurzov, according to the women, also tried to evict them, but the court sided with them.

Back in June 2025, the university's management notified former employees, who had been living in the university dormitory since 1987, of their eviction without providing alternative housing. Former university employees then stated that, by order of the new rector, the gate and the entrance to the university grounds were closed "without any warning," and at a personal meeting, the rector voiced "insults and threats." Zaurbi Shkhagapsoev explained to the "Caucasian Knot" at the time that he was forced to evict the former employees from the dormitory because the students had nowhere else to stay. live.

According to the Housing Code, individuals who have no other housing and are registered as needing housing cannot be evicted from official housing without being provided with other housing, lawyer Oleg Sergeev told the "Caucasian Knot" in June 2025. Also, according to him, the families of military personnel, security forces, pensioners, the disabled, as well as people who were provided with dormitory housing before March 1, 2005—before the Housing Code came into effect—who are registered as needing housing, cannot be evicted without being provided with other housing.
