A man died as a result of a rockfall in the mountains of Dagestan.

The principal of the school in the village of Khutrakh died as a result of a rockfall in the Tsuntinsky District.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on January 11, an avalanche occurred on the regional highway Agvali-Shauri-Kidero in the Tsuntinsky District, after which traffic on this section was closed. Dagestanavtodor reported on the road clearing.

The principal of a school in the village of Khutrakh in the Tsuntinsky district died as a result of a rockfall on a section of the Agvali-Shauri-Kidero highway, the head of the district, Akhmed Gamzatov, told the TASS news agency.

"Unfortunately, the principal of the Khutrakh school, Radzhab Zakaryayev, died as a result of a rockfall on a section of the Agvali-Shauri-Kidero highway," the agency quoted him as saying today.

A pile of rocks fell on the car in which Zakaryayev was traveling, the publication explains.

Avalanche danger is present in the mountains of Dagestan from 6 pm Moscow time on March 17 to 6 pm Moscow time on March 18, the republic's Ministry of Emergency Situations reported on its website on March 17.

"The occurrence of emergency situations and "Incidents involving damage to buildings and structures, communication and power lines, infrastructure facilities, disruption of motor transport, closure of roads, bridges, and tunnels, injuries and deaths in areas affected by avalanches," the publication states.

As a reminder, in early February, roads in the Tsuntinsky District were blocked by snow due to avalanches, and local residents had to carry the body of the deceased several kilometers for burial in his home village.

On March 25, 2025, an avalanche also occurred on the Agvali-Shauri-Kidero highway in the Tsuntinsky District. A temporary passage was established, but the following day, another avalanche occurred in the same area. Local residents were forced to participate in electrical grid repairs after sleet brought down power lines.

An avalanche blocked the road to the village of Elbok in the Tsuntinsky District, leaving villagers without access to medical care and children unable to attend school, according to an appeal to the Dagestan leadership on March 29, 2025. Road clearing efforts have been suspended due to the large volume of the avalanche and worsening weather, Dagestanavtodor reported.

In February 2023, residents of the village of Khutrakh were forced to carry a woman in need of urgent medical care for two kilometers through snowdrifts. Due to the snowfall, the roads were covered in a thick layer of snow, preventing ambulances from reaching her.
