Two regions of the North Caucasus have announced days off in connection with Eid al-Fitr.

Due to the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, March 19 and 20 will be non-working days in Dagestan, and March 20 has been declared a day off in Kabardino-Balkaria.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," this year in Chechnya, as well as Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia, the first day of Ramadan and fasting has been declared February 18. The Muftiate of Dagestan declared February 19 the first day of Ramadan. Due to the end of Ramadan, March 19, 20, and 21 have been declared non-working days in Chechnya.

Due to the celebration of Eid al-Fitr in Dagestan, March 19 and 20 have been declared non-working (holiday) days. The decree was signed by the regional government chairman, Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov, RIA Dagestan reported today.

"In accordance with the law 'On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Associations' and at the request of the Muftiate of the Republic of Dagestan, the government of the Republic of Dagestan decrees: to consider March 19 and 20, 2026, as non-working holidays," the decree states.

One day has been declared a non-working day in Kabardino-Balkaria, when Muslims will celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Fitr. The decree was signed by the head of the region, Kazbek Kokov. The document was published on the regional government website.

"In connection with the appeal of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic on the occasion of the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, I decree: to declare March 20, 2026, a non-working day in the KBR," the decree states.

According to Makhachkala residents, food prices have risen during Ramadan both at markets and stores. Amid the overall price hike, cafe and restaurant owners were also forced to raise prices. Before Ramadan, meat and egg prices in Makhachkala rose sharply.

Dagestan's head of government, Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov, stated that every year, as people prepare for Eid al-Fitr, some vendors and retail outlets try to profit from increased demand by unjustifiably raising prices. "I call on and warn all Dagestani entrepreneurs to show respect for their customers, for the traditions of our republic, and for this sacred holiday," the Prime Minister announced on March 11.

The rise in food prices is due to price hikes by suppliers and is a forced move for retail owners, Dagestani entrepreneurs said after authorities called on them not to raise prices ahead of Eid al-Fitr.
