Another car crash into the October Revolution Canal has raised questions for officials.

A passenger car with passengers fell into the October Revolution Canal in Makhachkala. Passersby came to the aid of the passenger and a child. Such incidents occur regularly, but officials are failing to address the canal's safety, Telegram users expressed outrage.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot," on February 4, 2024, a passenger car driven by a 23-year-old Makhachkala resident fell into the October Revolution Canal. Two passengers, children aged 10 and 14, were taken to the hospital in serious condition, where one of them died. Following this, authorities reported installing concrete barriers along the most dangerous sections of the canal. Fences should have been installed before the tragedy occurred, and along the entire length of the canal within the city limits, social media users pointed out.

The Dagestan Prosecutor's Office has taken control of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding a car crash into a canal in Makhachkala, the agency announced today on its Telegram channel.

A woman and child were rescued by passersby.

"According to preliminary data, on January 24, 2026, a car drove into the October Revolution Canal in Makhachkala. The woman and child inside were rescued by passersby, and the driver was later able to escape on his own," the publication stated.

Two boys died in The Dagestan Prosecutor's Office reported the launch of an investigation on the October Revolution channel. Telegram users recalled that people have drowned in the unfenced canal on numerous occasions.

The agency will assess "compliance with traffic safety and juvenile law," the prosecutor's office noted.

A video taken by eyewitnesses was posted today on the "Atypical Makhachkala | Dagestan" Telegram channel, which has 238,000 subscribers. "In the Semender area, a taxi carrying passengers plunged into the October Revolution Canal. Concerned local residents quickly came to the rescue and were able to save the woman and child before emergency services arrived," the video's caption reads.

The video, filmed at night, shows a car being carried by the current, and three men without safety gear climbing onto a crossbar over the water across the canal. One of them, balancing on a crossbar, picks up a child handed to them from the half-submerged car, while the other two pass the child to the shore, where another man receives him.

By 2:50 PM Moscow time, 217 comments had been posted. Many commenters considered the bystanders' actions heroic and commendable and expressed admiration for the rescuers.

At the same time, many commenters expressed outrage that authorities are not taking steps to prevent such incidents.

"Caucasian Knot" has repeatedly reported cases of cars falling into the October Revolution Canal. A car fell into the canal on February 15, 2022. Instagram users* pointed out then that this was happening due to the lack of fences along the canal and the narrow roadway.

On January 11, 2020, a car carrying a family with a four-year-old child fell into the canal. They were helped out of the water by a passing officer police.

On December 24, 2014, a 25-year-old driver and his passenger were killed in a similar accident. On October 5 of the same year, a Gazelle passenger van fell off a bridge into a canal. The driver and two passengers survived.
