Kadyrov confirmed his readiness to run again for the post of head of Chechnya
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said during a live broadcast that he is fed up with power, but will run for the republic's presidency in 2026 if the president nominates him and the people support him.
As reported by the " Caucasian Knot ," on July 14, 2023, Ramzan Kadyrov announced his intention to run in the next Chechen presidential elections. "Rumors are spreading that I'm being removed and that they're looking for someone else to replace me. They're not looking for anyone to replace me, and I won't allow the need to search for anyone. When my term is up, with Allah's permission, I'll run again, and if the people elect me, I'll continue to work," the state news agency "Chechnya Today" quoted Kadyrov as saying. In a post on his Telegram channel on July 14, 2023, Kadyrov called on residents of the republic "not to believe all sorts of rumors and speculation," the purpose of which is "to portray the region as unstable and undermine the leadership's authority."
On September 19, 2021, the second direct election for the head of Chechnya took place. In addition to Ramzan Kadyrov, the registered candidates included former Grozny Mayor and Deputy Head of the Chechen Presidential Administration and Government, Isa Khadzhimuradov, representing the A Just Russia party, and Chechen Parliament Member Khalid Nakayev, representing the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. According to the Central Election Commission, Ramzan Kadyrov received 99.7% of the vote in the Chechen presidential election, breaking his 2016 record. "A 100% vote seems inappropriate. Usually, it's 98-99%. And since in this case, there was a statement that if at least 2% were against, Ramzan Akhmatovich would resign, it was absolutely necessary to make it 99%," noted Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya, Director of the Center for Conflict Analysis and Prevention.
Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov is prepared to run for reelection in 2026 if President Vladimir Putin suggests it and the people support his decision, he said during a live Q&A broadcast on the Grozny State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company's website.
"I'll run for office if the president suggests it and the people support it. But if you ask me, I'm fed up with this government and serving the people. I think we need new forces, new people, more interesting ones," he said.
As a reminder, on May 20, 2021, Kadyrov stated that he would not participate in the upcoming elections if even "a few percent of the population" opposed his candidacy. Following this, participants of the World Congress of the Peoples of Chechnya adopted a resolution calling on Ramzan Kadyrov to nominate a candidate for the next regional gubernatorial election. Kadyrov promised to convey the position of the Chechen people to Putin, which he did that same day. In response, the Russian president offered Kadyrov the opportunity to participate in the fall elections.
