Security forces detained five Dagestani residents suspected of plotting a terrorist attack

Officers from the Dagestan Ministry of Internal Affairs' Center for Combating Extremism, together with the FSB Directorate for the Republic of Dagestan, detained five residents of the republic who were planning to commit a terrorist attack against law enforcement officers. The Investigative Committee of Russia for Dagestan has opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 30, Article 317, and Part 2 of Article 223.1 of the Russian Criminal Code, Gayana Gariyeva, head of the press service for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan, announced today on her Telegram channel.

A video of the suspects' detention was attached to the message. One of them was detained on the street near a car, the others were at home. The detention was carried out by large groups of security forces, according to the recording.

As "Caucasian Knot" reported, security forces recognized the attack on a traffic police unit in Makhachkala on May 5 as an act of terrorism and came to the conclusion that the participants in the attack had been planning it for about six months. Two police officers were killed in the shootout, two more security officers and three civilians were wounded. The Investigative Committee announced that one of the attackers survived and was in the hospital, and alsopleaded guilty. On May 12, he wastaken into custody on charges of attempted murder of law enforcement officers, theft of weapons, and car theft.

The attack on police officers in Makhachkala, unlike the terrorist attack in June 2024, does not appear to have been carefully planned, and the police officers at the post were chosen as the most accessible target, analysts previously interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" noted. According to unofficial reports, the attack involved Akhmed Alimagomedov and Batal Magomedov, natives of Dagestan, both born in 2000 and both of whom had not previously come to the attention of the security services.

On June 23, 2024, militants attacked an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent, and the Holy Dormition Cathedral and a traffic police post in Makhachkala. As a result, 22 people were killed and 46 were injured.
