EU treats flights to Sukhumi as violation of Georgia’s sovereignty

Russian airlines fly to Abkhazia without the consent of the Georgian authorities and in the absence of the necessary international aviation code for Sukhumi airport, the European External Action Service has stated, declaring its support for the Georgia’s territorial integrity.

The European Union (EU) has condemned the Russia’s decision to open regular commercial passenger flights to Sukhumi, the European External Action Service (EEAS) claims in its statement released today.

“This action, taken without the consent of the Georgian authorities and in the absence of a necessary international aviation code for the Sukhumi airport, is yet another step by the Russian Federation violating the Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The European Union reiterates its firm support for the Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders,” the EEAS emphasizes in its statement released on its official website.
