Ingush activist Barakh Chemurziev released from penal colony

Ingush activist Barakh Chemurziev has served his full sentence in the case on an extremist community. The man has been released from a penal colony in the Stavropol Territory.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in February 2024, when Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev, and Barakh Chemurziev had served most of their eight-year sentences, they requested a court to replace the remainder of their sentences with a punishment not related to imprisonment. In May 2024, the court refused to grant the convicts’ motions. The Stavropol Territorial Court upheld the first instance court’s decision. On February 4, Bagaudin Khautiev was released from the penal colony.

Seven Ingush activists were accused of creating an extremist community and participating in it. In December 2021, the court sentenced Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov, and Malsag Uzhakhov to 9 years, Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev, and Barakh Chemurziev – to 8 years, and Zarifa Sautieva – to 7.4 years of imprisonment.

Barakh Chemurziev and the other convicted Ingush activists have been prohibited from engaging in public activities and holding certain positions for three years, the “Fortanga” portal reports.

Let us remind you that since January 13, 2023, the Stavropol Territorial Court had been considering appeals against the verdict to seven protest leaders in Magas. The activists and their defenders pointed out that the court did not take into account many facts and testimonies indicating that the defendants were not guilty. However, in July of the same year, the court upheld the verdict.
