Karabakh historians urge to perpetuate lost monuments

The new website Monuments of Artsakh, which presents Armenian monuments, will draw international community's attention to the problem of preserving Armenian cultural monuments located in the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh that have come under Azerbaijan's control, historians believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after the end of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, the parties to the conflict began accusing each other of attempts to destroy each other's cultural heritage. On February 16, participants in the protest action in Yerevan demanded from the UN to stop the destruction of the Armenian cultural heritage that occurred in the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh that came under Azerbaijan's control and urgently send UNESCO officials there.

On February 15, the presentation of the official website Monuments of Artsakh (www.artsakhmonuments.com) of the SNKO (State Nagorno-Karabakh Organization) "State Service for the Protection of the Historical Environment of Artsakh (the self-name of Nagorno-Karabakh)" was held at the Francophonie Centre in Stepanakert.

"The new platform was launched in order to convey the truth to the international community. The multilingual website will present the monuments located in the Artsakh territory. Particular attention will be paid to the monuments with a pre-war appearance remaining in the territories [that came under Azerbaijan's control]," Armine Airapetyan, the director of the SNKO, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

She recalled that after the war, in the fall of 2020, about 2000 historical and cultural monuments remained in the territories that came under Azerbaijan's control.
