Prosecutor asks 11 years in prison for Eldar Gasanov

The prosecution has demanded from the court to sentence Eldar Gasanov, a former Azerbaijani Public Prosecutor General and Ambassador to Serbia, to 11 years in prison, as well as to confiscate his property.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Eldar Gasanov faces up to ten years in prison. His defence asked to release him due to the deterioration of his health, but the prosecutor's office has stated that he has no diseases incompatible with the arrest.

In 2001-2013, Gasanov was the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Romania and, in 2013-2020 – to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. He was detained on August 13, 2020, on charges of misuse of state budget funds and abuse of powers. Gasanov declared his innocence; and human rights defenders linked the persecution of the former ambassador to his political ambitions.

Today, the Baku Grave Crimes Court, at the trial of Eldar Gasanov, has listened to the final speech of the state prosecutor, who asked to sentence Gasanov to 11 years in prison, Djavad Djavadov, an advocate for Gasanov, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Today, the court has listened to the final statement of the state prosecutor. He actually repeated the indictment, ignoring the content of the judicial investigation, which has failed to present any reliable proofs of Gasanov's guilt. The prosecutor asked to sentence my client to 11 years in prison," said the advocate.

According to his version, the defence disagrees with the prosecutor's conclusions. "We'll insist on an acquittal, because Gasanov's guilt has not been proved," the advocate has stated.
