Advocates urge Azeri President to intervene in Gasanov's case

In their open letter to the President of Azerbaijan, Eldar Gasanov's advocates have expressed doubts about the fair trial of the case of Gasanov, a former public prosecutor general, and asked Ilham Aliev to intervene in the situation with Gasanov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Eldar Gasanov, also a former Azeri Ambassador to Serbia, faces up to ten years in prison. His defence asked to release Gasanov due to deterioration of his health, but the prosecutor's office said that the defendant had no diseases incompatible with the arrest. On November 19, 2021, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) made a decision to take interim measures against Eldar Gasanov in connection with his state of health.

In 2001-2013, Gasanov was the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Romania and, in 2013-2020 – to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. He was detained on August 13, 2020, on charges of misuse of state budget funds and abuse of powers. Gasanov declared his innocence; and human rights defenders linked the persecution of the former ambassador to his political ambitions.

Eldar Gasanov's advocates have addressed their open letter to President Ilham Aliev and asked him to assist in stopping the "inhuman" attitude towards their client, the "Turan" News Agency has reported.

In the course of the six-month-long investigation, carried out on the international instructions of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO), not a single proof against Gasanov was obtained, while the court rejected, without any justification, all the 74 written and oral motions put forward by the defence. Even the motions demanding to let doctors to Gasanov and perform laboratory tests were rejected by the court, says the letter.

The advocates have doubted the fairness of the court's decision, which, in their opinion, operates under the GPO's full control; therefore, they asked Ilham Aliev to intervene in order to put an end to the "inhuman attitude towards Gasanov, aimed at his physical liquidation."
