Refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh receive houses in Armenia under charity programme

Three families of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh have been granted houses in the Lori Region from the “Children of Armenia” charity foundation, and other ten families are expecting to be settled in August.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that as a result of the hostilities in the autumn of 2020, about 35,000 residents of Nagorno-Karabakh became forced migrants. The authorities of the unrecognized republic expect to solve the housing problems of the forced migrants within three years.

Thirteen families from Nagorno-Karabakh, who lost their houses as a result of the war, became the beneficiaries of the “Children of Armenia” (COAF) charity foundation’s programme to provide forced migrants with housing in the Lori Region of Armenia. So far, three families have settled in the new houses, including two in the village of Dsekh, and one – in the village of Debed. These are old houses, purchased by the foundation together with household plots, renovated and fully equipped. The rest of the families will receive modular houses under the final stage of construction in the village of Debed, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent was informed by the COAF.

Families were selected according to 15 criteria. The preference was given to families with many children and families with disabled people who were deprived of the opportunity to return to their homes. “These families, among other things, should have a desire to settle in rural areas,” emphasized Koryun Khachatryan, the COAF’s executive director.
