Media tell story of domestic violence victim in Dagestan

A resident of Dagestan, who was circumcised in childhood, was regularly beaten up in marriage, and after the film release, she became object of harassment in social networks, the "Novaya Gazeta" writes.

In November 2020, the "Dozhd" TV Channel showed a documentary film "Those Who Have Taken Off Hijabs" about three women from the Muslim community of Dagestan.

One of the heroines, the 33-year-old Nina, is the daughter of an Avar from Georgia, who sent his seven-year-old daughter from Dagestan to her native village, where she was circumcised. At the age of 14, Nina was matched. She ran away from home while being pregnant with her third child after her husband beat her up, but she received no support from her relatives. The court took the side of her husband and ruled to leave the children with their father, since Nina "leads an immoral lifestyle, not befitting a mother with many children."

According to Nina, after the film, she was "raised to the rank of a woman who had disgraced Dagestan." "Instead of asking my ex-husband questions about why he beat up his pregnant wife, did not earn money, all the questions were addressed to me, because I took off my hijab, 'left my religion' and dared say about it to the camera," Nina has explained.

Let us remind you that the problem of domestic violence is acute for Dagestan, but many local residents do not want the facts about this to be made public, so as not to "disgrace the republic."
