Resident of Dagestan receives real prison term for domestic violence

The court has sentenced the ex-husband of Gulli Kazanbieva to 13 months in colony, finding him guilty of causing intentional harm to one's health, a threat of murder and illegal entry into one's housing. Kazanbieva is pleased with the verdict; and her lawyer sees no reason to appeal against it, taking into account the practice in Dagestan, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the ex-husband of Gulli Kazanbieva, a resident of Makhachkala, used to severely beat her up even after the divorce.

The verdict to Kazanbieva's ex-husband was passed on October 27. The court sentenced him to 13 months in a colony-settlement. With account the time spent in custody and under house arrest, the man will serve the remaining term of about seven months in the colony, says the statement posted on the website of the HRC "Memorial".

Gulli Kazanbieva has noted that she was happy with the verdict. She claims that law enforcement bodies had repeatedly refused to accept her applications about the violence committed by her husband, and the investigation and trial lasted for over a year. "I am very glad; for me even these seven months that he has still to serve, is a very great joy. I didn't believe it, honestly!" said the woman.

Nadezhda Borodkina, the Kazanbieva's advocate, believes that there is no sense to appeal against this verdict. "Having looked through the practice in Dagestan, I understand that they won't give any greater punishment under these articles," said the advocate, whose words are quoted in the release of the HRC "Memorial".
