Malsag Uzhakhov's arrest extended

The Fifth General Jurisdiction Court of Cassation of the Stavropol Territory has extended Malsag Uzhakhov's custody by two months.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after the rally in Magas on March 26, 2019, Malsag Uzhakhov, the 67-year-old chairman of the Ingush Council of Teips (family clans), was charged under articles on organizing violence dangerous to the life and health of state officials, on heading a non-profit organization that encouraged citizens to commit illegal actions, as well as under the article on organizing an extremist community.

The detention in custody of Malsag Uzhakhov has been repeatedly extended. Advocates express their concern over the conditions of transportation of their client from a SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Vladikavkaz to Nalchik and Pyatigorsk, since 67-year-old Malsag Uzhakhov suffers from health problems.

Now, the above court has ruled that Malsag Uzhakhov will be kept in custody until November 25, 2020, Djabrail Kuriev, his advocate, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent on September 18.

The advocate has noted that the defence decided to appeal against the ruling of the cassation court to the judicial collegium for criminal cases of the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia.

Malsag Uzhakhov is a Category II invalid; he has a number of serious diseases; and the list of medications he needs has increased significantly during his custody, his brother, Savarbek Uzhakhov, told the "Caucasian Knot".

"There was a time when the paddy wagon, in which Malsag was transported to court sessions in Pyatigorsk or Stavropol, was accompanied by an ambulance with a team of cardiologists: he repeatedly felt bad, and doctors had to make injections," the brother has added.
