In Chechnya, drivers with many children criticize road police

In Chechnya, inspectors of the road police (known as GIBDD) carry out raids and fine drivers who violate the rules for transporting children. Car owners who have four or more children in their families are technically unable to install the required number of child seats in their cars, residents of the republic note.

The police raids to detect drivers transporting children without car seats were caused by more frequent road traffic accidents, the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported. "Last week alone, seven road traffic accidents were registered in the republic, in one of which two minor children were killed," the Chechen MIA reports.

The traffic rules prohibit transportation of children under the age of 12 without special restraining child seats, the MIA emphasizes.

"I have four small children in my family. I'm not able to install child seats for all of them in my car: they just won't fit there," said Isa, a resident of Grozny.

"My neighbour is a father of many children: there are six children in his family. So, he was fined for carrying children without child seats ... I understand that everyone is to comply with the safety rules when transporting children, but the road police could also understand the situation of the father with six children," Viskhan said.
