Law enforcers detain an imam of a Makhachkala mosque

Nigmatul Radjabov, an imam of a Makhachkala mosque, was detained at the entrance to the city. The imam was informed that he was included in the police preventive registration list as an extremist and was wanted.

According to the "Chernovik" (Draft), law enforcers requested the imam to explain where he was going and where he lived. Nigmatul Radjabov refused and referred to the fact that he was informed at the Dagestani Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) that no police preventive registration existed. However, in the database, the imam is listed in the police preventive registration list as an extremist, the edition reports. Nigmatul Radjabov was taken to a police station for investigation.

According to Nigmatul Radjabov, six months ago he was also stopped at a checkpoint and was informed that he had been on the police preventive registration list. However, then law enforcers did not provide any documentary evidence and failed to detain him.

Nigmatul Radjabov is an imam of a Salafi mosque. Earlier, he had complained about attempts to kidnap his son. One such attempt took place in Makhachkala on February 1. According to the imam, unidentified people tried to force the young man into their car when he went for a run, but he managed to escape. A similar incident occurred on September 7, 2017.

In March 2017, the Dagestani MIA reported the abolition of orders on the police preventive registration in the "extremist" category. However, rights defenders claim that the practice of registering believers still exists. In July 2018, residents of the Dagestani village of Terechnoe complained about mass cases of the police preventive registration.
