ECtHR awards compensation to convicts in Armenian "March 1 case"

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ordered the Armenian authorities to pay Grigor Voskerchyan and Masis Aivazyan 7500 euros in total in compensation for their unjustified arrest in the case on disorders on March 1, 2008.

The ECtHR has found a violation of Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), dealing with the right to liberty and personal immunity, the advocate Musheg Shushanyan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, explaining that the ECtHR decisions state that Armenian judicial authorities failed to justify the arrest of Voskerchyan and Aivazyan.

"As compensation, the ECtHR has ordered to pay 3000 euros to Grigor Voskerchyan, and 4500 euros to Masis Aivazyan," Mr Shushanyan said.

In June 2009, Voskerchyan was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of calling for the seizure of power, but was released under an amnesty right in the courtroom. Masis Aivazyan was sentenced to one and a half years of conditional imprisonment, after he was found guilty of violence against the police, writes the portal "Datalex.am".
