Azerbaijani SC upholds verdict to Giyas and Gasan Ibragimov

Today, the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan has dismissed a complaint filed against the sentences of activist Giyas Ibragimov and his father Gasan Ibragimov, who were found guilty of insulting judges.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2016, the court found Giyas Ibragimov and his associate Bairam Mamedov guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced them to ten years of imprisonment. On December 18, 2017, in Baku, the court added three months to the sentence of activist Giyas Ibragimov, while his father Gasan Ibragimov was sentenced to 1.5 years of correctional labour. Both men were found guilty of contempt of court during the appellate proceedings in the activist's case.

Activists treat the verdict pronounced against Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov as a revenge for graffiti on the pedestal of the monument to Heydar Aliev.

Today, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has considered the cassation appeal of Ibragimov father and son.

"The defence requested the court to close the criminal case on justification. The statements voiced by Giyas and Gasan Ibragimov against the court and judges fit into the freedoms of expression guaranteed by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Freedoms," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Elchin Sadygov, an advocate of the sentenced men.

The SC of Azerbaijan has dismissed the complaint. Both defendants intend to bring the case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), emphasizes the advocate.
