Giorgi Margvelashvili refuses to run for Georgia's presidency

The President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili has stated that he has no intention to participate in the upcoming presidential election. After this statement was made, the opposition criticized the President, while members of the ruling party said that Margvelashvili had no chance to win.

The presidential election is scheduled for October 28. As of September 1, parties and initiative groups had submitted 35 presidential candidates to the Central Election Commission (CEC); three of them have already been registered.

Mr Margvelashvili has declared his refusal to take part in the pre-election race during a public lecture at the President's Palace on August 31.

"He's missed an excellent chance to do something good for Georgia during these five years. The only things that happened in those years were disputes with the 'Georgian Dream' Party," Nika Meliya, an MP from the "United National Movement", has commented on Margvelashvili's statement on air of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company.

Giorgi Margvelashvili is trying to escape responsibility for what is happening in the country, said Elen Khoshtariya, an MP from the "European Georgia".

The members of the parliamentary majority believe that the incumbent president has no chance to win the election.

"It seems he has realistically assessed his chances," Mamuka Mdinaradze, the head of the "Georgian Dream" parliamentary faction, said on air of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company.
