FSIN asserts that Imam Velitov's condition is stable

The state of health of Makhmud Velitov, an Imam of the Moscow "Yardyam" Mosque, who has been hospitalized in a hospital of a correctional colony in Astrakhan, caused no doctors' fears, the local department of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) has reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 29 it became known that Velitov was urgently hospitalized in extremely grave condition. His advocate Dagir Khasavov stated that Velitov was not "cured to the end" during his last hospitalization a month ago.

In April 2017, Makhmud Velitov was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a penal colony. The court found justification of terrorism in the Makhmud Velitov's preaching about killed Dagestani religious figure Abdullah Gappaev, who, according to investigators, was a member of the organization "Hizb ut-Tahrir" banned in Russia. The Imam claims he was not aware that the law enforcement bodies considered Abdullah Gappaev as a terrorist. The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" recognized the Imam to be a political prisoner.

"Yesterday (on August 29) the convict Velitov was routinely transferred to a regional hospital at the correctional facility. Today, health professionals assess his state of health as satisfactory and stable. He is under constant medics' supervision and receives the necessary treatment. There is no treat to the convict's life and health," the TASS quotes Yulia Dubrovina, the head of the press service of the FSIN for the Astrakhan Region, as saying.

Earlier, Mr Khasavov stated that Velitov had been hospitalized in extremely grave condition. According to his story, the Imam was taken to the same hospital, from where earlier this month he was returned to IK-10 (colony, where he serves his term) "without any treatment."
