Developments in Chechnya

Unknown persons committed an armed attack on a group of police officers in the capital of Chechnya yesterday. One policeman was killed, and another one received a serious wound.

The incident occurred in Grozny's Leninskii district last night. Two unidentified persons clashed with three republican police officers who were off duty in Chukotskaia St at about 10 pm. One of the criminals suddenly fired his handgun shooting dead one and seriously wounding another policeman. The third officer of Chechnya's Internal Affairs Ministry fired back, but the attackers managed to escape, according to a source with local law enforcement agencies.

Officers of the district police station found the bodies of two local residents on the outskirts of Berdykel, Grozny district, yesterday, according to Prague Watchdog. Both had died of multiple gunshot wounds.

More than 70 dead bodies have been found in Chechnya since the beginning of this year, according to the unit on duty of the republican Internal Affairs Ministry. Only 32 have been identified. The remaining ones have been buried without identification.
