120 "Chernobyl victims" from Kabardino-Balkaria demand to review compensation

The decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has given hope to participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, who seek for compensation, earlier recognized illegal by the court in Kabardino-Balkaria. 120 people filed claims to the Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 7, 2017, the ECtHR considered the complaints filed by Vladimir Vorokov, a participant in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, and other "Chernobyl victims" who complained about non-payment of compensation for moral harm. More than 100 people appealed to the ECtHR. The European Court considered legal the decisions on payment of compensation to the "Chernobyl victims", which were later abolished by the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria.

120 "Chernobyl victims" filed to the SC of Kabardino-Balkaria the complaints with requests to review the decision of the court on newly discovered circumstances, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by advocate Magomed Abubakarov on July 5.

According to the advocate, the decision of the ECtHR is a newly discovered circumstance which can be a basis for appeals to the Supreme Court of the KBR.

"The 'Chernobyl victims' lost their health. Till present, the moral harm inflicted on them is still expending, and thus, they had the right to receive compensation," Magomed Abubakarov believes.
