URA states anti-Armenian campaign in Russian mass media

The agreement with the European Union (EU) embodies the Armenia's multi-vector foreign policy, and in no conflict with its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), participants of the parliamentary hearings have stated. Residents of Armenia and members of the Armenian Diaspora in Russia are outraged by the criticism of the agreement by Russian mass media.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 24, Armenia became the only EAEU country that signed an enhanced partnership agreement with the EU.

This caused a wave of negativity in Russian mass media, the Union of Russia Armenians (URA) asserts. It has demanded, on its website, from Russian authorities to remove the journalists and politicians who "damage the Russian-Armenian relations from the air."

According to Ruben Megrabyan, an expert of the Armenian Centre for Political and International Studies, "the Russian propaganda has unleashed a war against the agreement."

Stepan Safaryan, a "Facebook" user from Armenia, wrote that on November 28, the NTV programme "Unchangeable Meeting Place", Armenia was compared to "an unfaithful wife, a Trojan Horse and a traitor." "And then they are surprised at the origin of anti-Russian sentiments in our countries," Mr Safaryan has concluded.

The development of Armenia's relations with the EU will not harm the interests of any other country or the EAEU, Ara Babloyan, the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, ha stated.

Armen Ashotyan, Deputy Chair of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, is sure that the agreement with the EU will only strengthen the Armenian-Russian relations.

Grant Mikaelyan, a political analyst and a researcher for the Caucasus Institute, believes that after signing the agreement with the EU, Armenia will be more confident in negotiating with Russia.
