US Senate to consider resolution on Russia's occupation of Georgia

The US Senate will consider the situation with the presence of Russian troops in the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which were deployed there on the basis of Russia's bilateral agreements with these republics. This was stated by Temur Yakobashvili, Georgia's Ambassador to the United States.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) had adopted a resolution on Georgia, where South Ossetia and Abkhazia maintained the status of "occupied territories". The Russian party said that the PACE continued to incorrectly interpreting the events in the region.

"The US Senate is preparing a resolution in support of Georgia, which will create a substantial basis for a number of actions in the future," the "News-Georgia" reports with reference to the Georgian Ambassador to the USA.

The draft resolution was designed by a group of senators from both political parties represented in the Senate - Republicans and Democrats.

The document criticizes the official Russia's position towards Georgia's conflict with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Till the end of 2011 the draft resolution will be discussed in specialized committees of the Senate. Then it will be brought for approval by the Supreme Chamber of the US Congress, the "GHN" reports.
