Head of Kabardino-Balkaria visits SIZO

Yesterday in the evening, on April 20, Arsen Kanokov, head of Kabardino-Balkaria, visited the temporary detention facility (also known as SIZO - pre-trial prison) of the Department for the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) of the Federal Punishment Service (FSIN) of the Russian Federation. The reason for the visit was in complaints of the figurants in the Nalchik attack case against toughening of their custody conditions, which was reported by the "Caucasian Knot".

"Following their complaints and applications, the Prosecutor's Office claims of the KBR conducted a check, which found the actions of the SIZO personnel to be legitimate, and the complaints and applications of the suspects and defendants - unjustified," said Arthur Makhov, Deputy Public Prosecutor of the KBR, told the head of the republic.

Arsen Kanokov, while wanting to be personally sure of respect of defendants' rights, examined the SIZO blocks and studied the social and living conditions of custody in the new regime building of the SIZO.

The new regime building has all the necessary conditions for inmates' detention, individual hygiene and respect for human rights in places of detention. Mr Kanokov inspected the cells and learned the regulations on the day order for suspects and defendants. He also visited the kitchen and canteen, where he checked the quality of cooking, as asserted by the press service of the President of the KBR.

The examination process caused no remarks. The head of the republic was pleased with what he had seen. He spoke with the detainees kept in the cells of the regime building of the SIZO. In the course of the conversation, no complaints were expressed by suspects and defendants to the president, as stated by the press service.
