European Court acknowledged Turkey guilty of Hrant Dink's death

On September, 14, European Court of Human Rights acknowledged the state of Turkey guilty of the murder of Hrant Dink, a journalist of Armenian origin, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Akos". In this way the claim submitted against the Turkish authorities was secured.

We will remind you that editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Akos" Hrant Dink was shot down in Istanbul on January, 19. It turned out that the journalist's murderer was an 18 year old Ogyun Samast. About twenty people were brought before the court. The process on the case is not yet accomplished.

Two claims were submitted to the European Court in Strasbourg.

The first one was that of editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Akos" Hrant Dink himself for he had undergone victimization. He was appealing against the criminal case brought against him, he was accused of an "insult of Turkish identity".

After the murder of Hrant Dink in 2007 his family also submitted a claim to the European Court accusing the Turkish authorities of having not protected the journalist's right for life.

"Armenia Today" reported that the European Court acknowledged Turkey guilty on both accusations and made it incumbent upon the Turkish Government to pay off to Dink's family a compensation over 130 thousand euros and over 28 thousand euros for legal costs.
